Herberta — Privacy Policy

Effective date: 9 August 2026 · App: Herberta (com.herberta.app) · Replaces the policy of 31 July 2026

The short version

Herberta has no accounts and no sign-in, and it still does not know who you are. Your learning progress stays on your device. Once a day the app sends us a short list of counts — how many times a screen was opened, how many people got a particular quiz question right. Nothing is attached to that list that could point back to you or to your phone. You can switch it off in Settings.

What changed, and when

Until now this page said Herberta collected nothing at all. That was true of every version published up to this date. Counting begins with the app update that follows this date — every version published before it sends nothing, and nothing you have used so far has sent anything.

We are telling you rather than quietly editing the page, because the old wording was a promise, and because that same page promised we would update it before any such change reached your phone. This is us keeping it.

What we send, exactly

Once a day, when you open the app, it sends one small message for each day that has finished. The whole message is:

A real example, in full:

{
  "v": 1,
  "day": "2026-08-09",
  "app": "1.9.3",
  "platform": "android",
  "lang": "en",
  "counters": { "screen.home": 4, "quiz.q.chamomile_q1.ok": 1, "session.minutes.5-9": 1 }
}

Five fields and a list of counts. Nothing else is in the message, and there is no second message.

There is one rare extra. The app refuses to track more than 2,000 different counter names in a day, so that a bug can never fill your phone. If it ever hits that limit, the message carries one more number saying how many were dropped. It is a count of our own mistakes, nothing about you.

What we never send

One thing we cannot avoid: any server your phone talks to sees your IP address while the connection is open. Our collector never reads it and never records it — not in a log, not in the stored record. The hosting provider that carries the request sees it as any network provider would; we do not export, receive or keep those logs.

There is no identifier, and here is what that means in practice

Two phones that did the same things on the same day produce the same message, character for character. There is no way to tell them apart, no way to tell today's message from the same phone as yesterday's, and no way to count how many people use the app from this data. That is not a promise we are keeping carefully — it is the shape of the data.

What we deliberately cannot do

We cannot single you out. We cannot build a profile, follow one reader across days, work out whether two messages came from the same person, sell your data, or target you with anything. Not because we have decided not to: because there is nothing in what we hold to do it with.

The cost falls on us, and it is real. We can only ever answer questions we thought to count in advance, and we can never connect what someone did to whether they stayed. We took that trade on purpose.

Your progress is only ever a band

We never receive the number of herbs you have mastered. We receive which band you are in — one of 0, 1–4, 5–10, 11–25, 26–50, 51–100, 101–203, 204. Your streak and your rank are sent the same way, as a band. So the data can say “today, a number of devices were in the 5–10 band”; it can never say what any single phone had done.

Quiz numbers are about the questions, not about you

This is the main reason the counting exists. The app ships 1,632 hand-written quiz questions, and some of them are badly worded — two defensible answers, or a wrong one that reads as right. The only honest way to find them is to see how often each is missed.

So the counts are per question: chamomile_q1 was answered correctly 47 times and incorrectly 9 times today, across everyone. That describes the question. It says nothing about who answered it, and there is nothing in the data that could connect one of those 9 to a person.

How to turn it off

Settings → “Help improve Herberta”. It is on when you install the app. Switch it off and:

No restart, no account, no email to us. You can switch it back on the same way.

Where the counts live, and for how long

On your phone. The running tally sits in the app's own storage. At most seven days of unsent counts are kept; anything older is dropped rather than saved up. Uninstalling the app removes it.

On our side. The server adds your numbers into the totals for that day and discards the message. It keeps only totals — one row per combination of day, app version, platform, language and counter name. There is no row per message, no table of requests, no session table and no device table; there is only that one table of sums, so there is nothing that could later be joined back together.

The collector runs on Cloudflare, and the totals are stored in a Cloudflare D1 database created with EU jurisdiction — meaning Cloudflare restricts both storage and processing of it to the European Union, rather than merely preferring a region.

We keep those totals indefinitely, and we are being straight about why: there is nothing in them to expire. A row saying quiz.q.chamomile_q1.ok = 47 on a given day tells you as little about a person in ten years as it does today.

Deleting your data — the honest answer

There is no request form, because there is nothing to look up. Once a day's counts have been added into the totals, no one — including us — can tell which numbers came from your phone, so no one can take them out again.

What you can delete is on your device: switch “Help improve Herberta” off, which erases the tally, or uninstall the app, which erases everything.

What Google Play collects, separately from us

Google Play distributes the app, and Google counts things we do not. As the store, Google reports to us how many people installed the app, how many devices are active, day-to-day and month-to-month use, how many people come back, and crash reports from devices set to send them — broken down by country, app version, Android version and device model.

That is Google's collection, under Google's privacy policy, not ours. We only see the summary tables in the Play Console. We mention it because “how many users are there” is answered by Google, not by anything in this policy — and that is precisely why our own counting needs no identifier. The same applies to Apple's App Store statistics wherever the app is distributed there.

Permissions

Notifications (optional). If you allow notifications, Herberta schedules local reminders on your device. They are generated entirely on the phone; no service of ours is involved and no notification passes through us. You can revoke the permission at any time in your system settings. We do count how often a reminder is tapped, as a plain number, in the message described above.

Sharing features

When you use a share button, the app opens your device's standard share sheet with a line of text you can send wherever you choose. We do not see or store what you share.

Data stored on your device

Your learning progress — herbs reviewed, quiz results, streaks, favourites, your chosen nickname and language — is saved only in the app's local storage. It never leaves your phone. Uninstalling the app deletes it. What leaves the phone is the list of counts described above, and nothing else.

Children

Herberta is for a general audience. The counts contain no identifier, so they contain no persistent identifier for a child any more than for an adult, and nothing in them is personal information about anyone. The app has no accounts, no messaging, no advertising and no ad network.

Who is responsible, and on what basis

The data controller is Arnau Puig, an independent developer based in Barcelona, Spain, contactable at herbertablog@gmail.com. Write to that address for anything in this policy, including data protection questions; a postal address is available on request.

Purpose. Two things, and no others: finding quiz questions that are wrong or badly worded, and seeing where the app loses people so it can be fixed. The counts are not used for advertising, are not sold, and are not shared with anyone.

Legal basis. Our position is that these counts are anonymous statistics — with no identifier and day granularity, they are not about an identified or identifiable person — and that EU data protection law therefore does not apply to them. Where that view is not accepted, we rely on legitimate interests (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR) in making a product work properly, and the switch in Settings is the objection route: it is there before anything is collected rather than after, and it works instantly.

We are telling you the reasoning we relied on, not claiming a ruling. If a regulator reads it differently, we will change the app rather than reword this page.

Health content notice

Herberta is an educational app about the history and traditional uses of herbs. It does not provide medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Always consult a healthcare professional before using any plant for medicinal purposes. Nothing in the counts records anything about your health — a quiz answer about chamomile is a fact about the question, not about you.

Changes to this policy

If the app changes in a way that affects your privacy, we will update this page and the effective date above before the change reaches your phone, and we will say what changed in the section near the top rather than swapping the wording quietly.

{
  "v": 1,
  "day": "2026-08-09",
  "app": "1.9.3",
  "platform": "android",
  "lang": "es",
  "counters": { "screen.home": 4, "quiz.q.chamomile_q1.ok": 1, "session.minutes.5-9": 1 }
}

Qué no enviamos nunca

No podemos señalarte.

Nunca recibimos cuántas plantas has dominado.

Ajustes → «Ayúdanos a mejorar Herberta».
